My approach to therapy draws from several theories within the field of psychology. Simply put, I believe our past influences our present. This is especially true when we are experiencing difficulties. Therefore, my therapy approach involves thoroughly exploring your current difficulties while also examining how your past experiences relate to your present challenges. A common concern I hear when someone is first entering therapy is "I don't want to dwell in the past, I want to move forward." What most people do not understand is that dwelling in the past is very, very different from understanding the past. By understanding how our past "plays out" in the present, we can then modify current behaviors that are directly contributing to our difficulties. It is true that we cannot change the past. But what we can do together is understand it and help you move forward.
